10 Essential Rules for Life

You probably heard sayings like “Eat your vegetables to grow big and strong” or “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. While this advice is generally helpful, it might not work if you end up being 4’7 or really dislike apples. Your elders might have meant well when they said “the early bird catches the worm”, but who wants to get up out of their bed at 4 a.m. to catch worms?

Seriously, life has a lot of rules, but how can you tell which ones will give you the greatest advantage? If you’re looking for a list of rules that guarantee success or inner peace, keep scrolling and become the wisest person you know.

1. “Time is the most valuable thing a man can spend.”

Theophrastus

Money can buy things we attach value to, but can never buy time. Time spent with loved ones or on the things that bring contentment is a better investment.

2. “Don’t forget to love yourself.”

Soren Kierkegaard

This rule can take a great deal of time and experience for some to learn. Many people can look to others for love or validation, while failing to do this for themselves. It’s not possible to love another if you don’t love yourself first. Keep in mind, the relationship you have with yourself is the most important one.

3. “Don’t tell your friend what your enemy shouldn’t know.”

Arthur Schopenhauer

An important life lesson many discover is an enemy can turn into an ally or an ally can turn into an enemy. Never fully expose your hand as it could lead to someone you once trusted with the security codes to betray you.

4. “Respect yourself and others will respect you.”

Confucius

Others will treat according to the standards you set for yourself. If they’re lacking, people may treat you according to theirs. Which might not be up to par, sometimes.

5. “Never chase happiness, it is always within.”

Pythorias

In life, consider yourself as a manufacturer, not a consumer. Establishing yourself as a source eliminates the need for third-party suppliers. Don’t search for qualities outside of yourself that you should develop and foster from within.

6. “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”

Benjamin Franklin

Your mind is your most valuable asset. Your focus determines whether you’ll achieve wealth or poverty in the long run.

 7. “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live in.”

Jim Rohn

What’s the use of living in a stunning castle if you’re unable to move around and take pleasure in it? Consider your body as your castle. Treat it royally.

8. “A wise man speaks because he has something to say, a fool because he has to say something.”

Plato

Most have the ability to speak; few have the discernment to know when silence is golden.

9. “Attack the evil that is within yourself, rather than attacking the evil that is in others.”

Confucius

If you desire to see change others, be the change.

10. “Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny.”

Lao Tzu

For better or worse, you create your destiny. Be mindful.
